A fragmented reconfiguration of a national icon
FEMALE approaches Aliki Vougiouklaki not as a life story, but as a public figure built through memory, performance, and repetition.
Three different bodies take on the same figure, each showing a different side of her.
Female brings together staged scenes, made-up archival footage, and changing performances, showing a film star in different, sometimes conflicting ways. She never settles into a single version of herself.
The film shifts between what feels real and what is performed, focusing on femininity, on being watched. It touches on the pressures of stardom and the difficulties of living with a public image that never fully belongs to you.
Konstantinos Menelaou is a Greek filmmaker who works in experimental and hybrid cinema.
His films often engage with queer stories and the ways images are shaped and understood, placing particular weight on form through composition, rhythm, texture, and the relationship between sound and image.
He often uses these elements not only as style, but as a way of creating meaning and emotional intensity.
He is also the founder of The Queer Archive.
